Dosing Fuel with Carbonex

Fuel Oils

For dosing system diagram click here: Dosing_HFO.pdf

Fuel oil can be dosed with Carbonex HFO in several ways, depending on available pumping equipment and configuration of the fuel handling system.  Maximum benefits are obtained when Carbonex HFO is thoroughly mixed with fuel oil, as far as possible upstream of the engines.

While bunkering, Carbonex HFO can be metered into the fuel oil line with a dosing pump system, before the manifold, to treat the entire fuel supply in all storage tanks.  Alternatively, Carbonex HFO can be added to storage tanks just prior to filling them with fuel.  If storage tanks are not settling tanks, it is preferable to inject Carbonex HFO into the fuel transfer line to the settling tank, or to the day tank, by way of a chemical metering pump designed to work with petroleum solvents at the appropriate flow rate.

For standard grades of marine residual fuel oils, the recommended dosage rate of Carbonex HFO is 1:5000, or 1 liter per 5 tonnes of fuel.  During the first week of treatment, a higher dosage rate of 1:4000 is recommended.  When calculating the amount of additive required for an initial treatment, it is necessary to include enough Carbonex HFO to dose the untreated fuel already in the fuel system and tanks, in addition to dosing the incoming delivery of fuel oil.

Coal

Carbonex Coal can be sprayed onto pulverized coal prior to combustion or it can be injected into the combustion chamber. If sprayed onto the coal, care must be taken to ensure a complete and homogeneous coverage of the fuel. The Carbonex injection method involves spraying a stream of oil, dosed with Carbonex Coal, into the combustion chamber during coal firing. This eliminates the need for expensive modifications to existing systems or pre-treating the coal, which can affect coal handling characteristics. Conversion costs and down time required to convert to Carbonex fuel treatment are minimal.

Carbonex Treatment Rates

Since Carbonex treatment is fuel and site specific, blending ratios may vary. The recommended blending rates are:

Carbonex Diesel:    1 liter to 3,000 liters diesel

Carbonex HFO:       1 liter to 5,000 liters (5 tonnes) #6 fuel oil

Carbonex Coal:      1 liter to 5 tonnes coal
